According to the National Recreation and Park Association, in the past decade, participation in youth sports has decreased by 8% and the gap is growing, especially for lower income families (Kardys, Jack 2019, October Leveling the the Playing Field of Youth Sports, Parks & Recreation, Volume 54). Recent research published by the Rand Corporation confirmed that children from lower income families are less likely to participate in sports. Do you know that over 50% of the students in our district qualify for free and/or reduced meals? This means that their family is living at or below the federal poverty threshold. For a family of four that is an annual income of $25,750 or less. This leaves little to no discretionary income for a family to enroll their child in youth sports programs or to provide safe alternatives for before and after school activities. In the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District, this means that potentially, 2,300 students in grades 4K-8th grade may never have the opportunity to participate in a youth sports program or be actively engaged in an Before or After School Action Program. Your donation can help ensure that a student from our district can reap all the benefits that youth sports has to offer or can ensure that a student has a safe place to play and be active during before and/or after school. No donation is too small and every dollar helps our Department to ensure that every child has a chance. If you would prefer to mail a check, please print our Champion for a Child form and make a check payable to WAWM RCS Department. You can mail the check to our office at 2450 S. 68th St., West Allis, WI 53219. If you would like to call and make a payment, please call us at 414-604-4900.
