Our featured employee of the month is Mike Elliott. Mike leads the West Allis Roadrunners Summer Running Club. He started the program 4 years ago as a way to teach youth, grades 3-6, the proper techniques for distance running coupled with fun, nutrition and healthy habits. The Roadrunners meet at Nathan Hale 3 days per week, with two running groups totaling 20-30 runners. They run on the track, around the neighborhood and on the trails in Greenfield Park. Each summer the participants run a total of 50-60 miles! At the end of the summer they participate in a cross country race on the high school course in Greenfield Park. The best part for Mike is seeing the young people enjoy something that keep them active. He feels strongly that all kids should be included and have an opportunity to succeed.

During the school year, Mike is an elementary teacher in West Bend. He and his wife Lisa have lived in West Allis for 23 years. Their daughter Emily graduated from Hale and their son Joey will be an 8th grader this year at FLW.

Mike has also been a volunteer through the WAWM Recreation Department for over 15 years. He has coached many sports and had an influence on countless children. Mike stated “What I enjoy most about WAWM Recreation is all of the programs are kid friendly and the children are always the focus of the decisions/programs. The Roadrunners program is fun because every summer I get to work with 20-30 runners and see them improve their health and fitness”.

Thanks Mike for all that you have done for our department and for being a positive fitness role model for the children of our community. Way to go Mike!!
