How long have you been employed with the W.A.-W.M. Recreation & Community Services Dept.?

Kiersten:  3 years now and I have loved every minute of it.

Skylar:  I’ve worked the afterschool program prior to and then came back this summer to work summer playground.

Nicholas:  This was my first year with the Rec.

Jake:  In 2011, I started referring soccer, football and basketball.  I also did locker room duty making sure everything went smooth.

Tell us a little about yourself.

Kiersten:  I grew up on the WA-WM Summer Playgrounds, graduated from Central in 2010 and I am a graduate of UW-La Crosse.  I am a Broad Field Social Studies major with History Education, Political Science Education Minor and German Minor.  This past spring, I had the privilege of long-term subbing at Frank Lloyd Wright this past spring as a German and Global Cultures teacher.

Skylar:  I went to high school at Nathan Hale and played basketball all four years.  I am now a sophomore going for communications at UW-La Crosse.

Nicholas:  I’m 17, I go to Central.  I am on the Cross Country, swim and track teams.  I’m going to be a senior and I’m looking to go into engineering.

Jake:  I’m going to be a senior at Central and I play golf.  I’m always running around and playing with kids because I hate sitting still.  I grew up on the Jefferson Summer Playground so it was great to work there this summer.

What do you enjoy most about working with your programs or for the WA-WM Recreation Dept.?

Kiersten:  I love playing and getting to know the children who come to the playground.  My favorite part is creating relationships with the children and seeing them out in the community.  I also like working with the WA-WM Rec. Staff.

Skylar:  I really enjoyed the relationships you build with the kids and the great co-workers you meet; they are truly a great group.

Nicholas:  I loved being in the Fun Run and interacting with the kids.

Jake:  I enjoy that you’re always doing something and making a difference in my community.  Seeing the kids grow up through the different programs.

Highlights of the program(s) you run.

Kiersten:  Walking in the 4th of July Parade with the children and having Jefferson/Franklin children hold the theme banner to start the parade.  Family Movie Night at Franklin Playground, children made cars out of cardboard boxes and watched a car themed movie while sitting in their car.  Creating new playground games that may become a classic.

Skylar:  One of the last days when it rained extremely hard at Jefferson, we had a mini “waterpark.”  We also had a Movie Night at Franklin and made cars to replicate a “drive-in” movie.

Nicholas:  The parade was awesome.  Our kids held banners and were really fun to hang out with.  The games were fun to run as well.

Jake:  I loved getting there early and the kids were even earlier than you wanting to start playing right away.  Seeing the kids start leading the games after you start them and they would enforce the rules if anyone would cheat.
