The Power Of Youth Sports - Celebrating Park and Recreation Month

As part of National Recreation and Parks Association’s (NRPA) Park and Recreation Month, we  continue our celebration of The Power Of campaign. Parks and Recreation has the power to bring people together, strengthen health and build more inclusive communities. Our team at the WAWM Recreation & Community Services Department sees The Power Of recreation every day. Today we’re highlighting The Power Of Youth Sports.

When we think about youth sports, it's easy to focus on the fundamentals–making a great pass, scoring a goal, or hitting a ball for the first time. But some of the most important lessons happen beyond the scoreboard. Youth sports have the power to shape who children become, both on and off the field.

Through sports, children learn teamwork, perseverance, communication, and accountability. They learn how to handle challenges, grow from mistakes, and celebrate the success of others. These experiences build confidence and life skills.

Sports also create opportunities for children to build friendships, connect with positive role models, and feel like they belong. Every child deserves the chance to try something new, develop their skills, and experience the joy of being part of a team.

Coaches, parents, officials, and spectators play an important role in making these experiences positive. When we prioritize development over perfection and effort over results, we create an environment where every child can learn, grow, and enjoy the game.

At the WAWM Recreation & Community Services Department, we believe in The Power Of Youth Sports, especially in a world of high-cost, high-commitment club sports. We believe in providing a fun, structured experience for athletes to grow at a price that makes it possible for our families. Our goal isn't just to develop better athletes; It's to help develop confident, resilient and compassionate young people.

And the impact is growing.

This fall, WAWM RCS youth sports programs welcomed 181 more athletes than last fall, representing a 36% increase in participation–with an exceptional jump in soccer and flag football.

2025 Fall Participation

  • Volleyball: 145 athletes
  • Flag Football: 125 athletes
  • Soccer: 224 athletes
  • Total: 494 athletes

2026 Fall Participation

  • Volleyball: 148 athletes
  • Flag Football: 218 athletes
  • Soccer: 309 athletes
  • Total: 675 athletes

Behind every number is a child building confidence, developing new skills, making friendships and discovering what it means to be part of a team. As participation continues to grow, so does The Power of Youth Sports to build confidence, strengthen connections and create lasting impact in our community.
